Visual effects (VFX) have become increasingly important in the production of feature films today. From epic-sized miniatures and digitally animated characters to invisible effects such as wire removals and matte paintings, visual effects of some sort or another are now commonly required to help tell the stories that filmmakers want to tell. There are many techniques available, simple and complex, and a wide selection of effects professionals eager to perform the work, from the computer-in-the-garage independent to the major VFX studios.

But how to sort it all out? What kinds of effects are in that script? What is the best way to create a certain effect? What are the alternatives? Are there practical solutions to avoid unnecessary VFX? How will shooting VFX impact principal photography and the post-production process? How much will it cost? How long will it take? Who should perform the work? Is that a fair bid or contract? Lots of questions.
